I'm wondering if this isn't a desperate attempt to get gold / items to sell for cash, since it's a lot harder to bot-farm than it used to be.

Questions:
- Did anyone enter the 3 Year Anniversary Sweepstakes?
- Participate in Mini Mania Contests?
- Participate in GW Surveys?
- Been present when the following (or something similar occurred):
Quote:
Update - Saturday, October 20, 2007
[edit] Bug fixes

* Fixed an exploit that could be used to crash the game for every player in an instance.
- Been sent GW/PlayNC/Lineage Newsletters to your e-mail account, when you hadn't previously subscribed?
- Discovered "Lineage2.Keylogger" on your pc?

I'm not a techie to know how relevant any of these questions could be in the scheme of things, but they're concerns I've had since hearing about what's going on.

If I may, I'd like to advise everyone to calm down. All these threads about hacking, getting hacked, security and so on tend to make people a little bit more paranoid, and even a little bit can mean a lot when we're talking of paranoia (mass hysteria is the scientific name and everyone, even the most trained and intelligent person, can fall into that trap in a particular context).

Yes, there's a real threat and hacked accounts (though I believe that some people are lying about it). Yes you should check that your security is up-to-date and keep yourself informed by reading these threads. Yes (please yes!) ask questions whenever you have some.

But, no, don't feel that you're under direct threat. Being over-cautious will make your life miserable (e.g. "trust no one") and will actually decrease your security, because you're more prone to panicking and making a bad decision, while under the effect of emotions and misinterpretations.

As I was attempting to show in this thread, security is also a matter of social responsibility, but we need a balanced approach. Not to create impenetrable walls (which actually don't exist in the digital world) between us.

There are already advice/theory/tip threads about this topic. This thread is for comparing notes or adding questions for those that were hacked.

Anet already gave us calm advice to contact our neighborhood police officer to resolve this matter. -.-

Another question to keep this legit:
- Did those that got their account entered by someone else get the same response from Anet, after they put in a support ticket?

1: Where you online when you got hacked? if so what happend, where were you?

No. I havn't played in a while. But before logging on today, I did receive something in my hotmail. Something about GW Jane from GW guru sending me a private message. But I found no such PM on the site...

2: Do you use textmod? If you do, where did you download it from?

Never

3: Do you have your account linked to play NC or use the online store?

Yes, i have it linked and I purchased a pre-release for EoTN a few months ago...

I hope you didnt open that email. I personally never open any Forum automailer emails sayign I recieved a PM, or a thread I poste din was posted in.

I always delete them unread and go to the forums and look at subscriptions/PMs directly.

Another usefull question would be if anyone has a Screenie of the last group they were in (incase there were a 0.0000001% chance someone would actually make it). If it is someone on your team causing the disconnect, then they should be on more than one picture (BTW: DONT POST THE PICS HERE. Send them to Support)

A Guildie got an E-Mail from GWGuru stating he had a PM, when he got here & checked there was no PM. As of now, his account seems to be intact.

Who was the email from? I got one yesterday from [email protected], as opposed to the normal email, but obviously it was okay because a) it's Inde, and b) it was actually a PM.

There was a round of spam accounts that sent out PM's to forum users. About 6 different account names. When I banned the accounts I deleted out the PM's they had sent. So they were legit emails.

I think there was a small collection of accounts set up to send spam PMs to Guru members recently. I got a PM notification myself but there was none in my inbox when I went to guru directly.
If I remember right Inde said that they had caught 4 accounts doing it, deleted them and all the spam they sent - thus why theres no message in your inbox when you checked it.

A small wondering: with the recent spate of hijacks I have noticed people mentioning more that items like ectos and black dyes are going missing and occasionally that tormented weapons or high end items are being ignored. Theres also a couple of cases where ZKeys are being used rather than sold.

I have a rather large suspicion that whoever is behind these hackings are aiming for items that can be sold at merchants and liquidated fairly quickly. ZKeys cant be sold to merchants directly but can produce gold items which can. High end items are only worth their bigger price when dealing with other players which requires standing around and trying to sell them.
These seem to be hit and run attacks - taking items that can be changed to gold quickly and then dropping the account as fast as possible, not taking the time to strip all the toons down, salvage and delete.

The only thing I can think of that would cause such a difference would be the RMT changes. Perhaps liquidating assets before exchange is not as noticable, its not unusual for someone who is leaving the game to change their items into cash and give it to a friend or family member or do random giveaways in outposts.

Something still just doesn't make sense. Why use all the Z keys on the stolen account? If the hacker just wants a quick hit and run attack and isn't taking the time to loot the account then why is he taking the time to use up Z keys? Wouldn't it be much faster to simply trade all the keys/ecto/dye off the stolen account and onto the hacker's account?

The hacker may suspect that gold and stackable items that are subject to one-sided trades (e.g. ecto, keys, rare materials) might be items that are actively flagged by A-Net for review to identify RMT's, but gold items are not.

Sorry, my stuff is still intact. It was just a bug. The icons and textures weren't loading properly so it seemed as though I was cleaned out (only my gold was visible at that time) and only after restarting my client a couple of times did it come out. Sorry for the mistake.

This thread bumped down so I decided to put it here.

*mods* please clean up the thread again so we can keep reports orderly.

Everything was gone. 11 characters. 3 years worth of gameplay. 3 years worth of items. greens. golds. pets. armour. candy weapons. thousands of materials. 400K gold. my rank 6 emote.

In it's place was a level 1 warrior named "Tepo Tepo sux" It is 0 days old.
I think someone has cleaned this account out and then sold it to someone.

I actually think this is the most pissed off i've been in a long long time. Is nothing sacred anymore?
I had another of my accounts hacked a long time ago. They stole everything EXCEPT my monks 55hp farming gear and for that i was grateful as it allowed to me to keep farming and make gold.

I don't think i have it in me to start playing again. This might have just killed my Guild Wars experience forever.
I googled to see if anet can restore characters yet. Looks like a nope but then someone tells me someone they know had a character restored so i've reported it to Anet in the hope that something can be done. Even if i can only get a few characters back i'd be happy.

So yeah... someone hold me

Well, reading Fusa's post, they all seem to have a high value of in-game cash on them. I'm too lazy to search the rest, but it seems that this person, or group of people are aiming to steal money from players via hacking, and sell it online.

This is just an assumption, though.

Just an idea, but maybe the hacker just leaves poor people's accounts alone. Maybe he log's their account and sees its not worth the trouble taking just a small amount of cash. Might also be the reasoning behind the zaishen keys, hoping for a high value item(s) and just transfer those to wherever he stores them.

I'm still convinced this is a gold seller, Fusa.
If s/he was going through this for their own gain, they wouldn't be doing it excessively. I'm assuming it's a group of people due to the rate of hacking.

They pass over cash for game cash, may get banned, they lose nothing. The account is robbed, and the money is transfered.

Speaking of which, a recent thread gave me the idea Anet already banned one of them. My guess is a large sum of money, but I'm not aware of the full situation of this user.

Either way, the hacker(s) have access to gain. And with that, no loss.

I think its a gold seller too. I was just trying to rationalize why the people reporting being hacked have had fairly large amounts of gold/ectos etc. Also I just did a search to see how much GW gold was and saw that some are selling r9 golds and greens now, some over $100 (maybe stolen from the hack accounts?). I guess it could also be that however they got the login's/passwords for the people it was done a while ago, giving the people time to accumulate large amounts of gold.

And don't waste your time saying I was searching GW gold seller's to buy gold. I was curious what the current price is compared to before Anet did the crackdown a month or so ago. It seems to have raised some but not enough to the point where they have had a significant drop in supply.
